I purchased stock in Northwind Ethanol from Durell and Asscoiates from toronto who have since gone out of business. The ethanol company does exist but i can't be sure if the stock is real or not and repeated attempts to call northwind have been futile as have emails.. Anyone know if this has been reported or know of a way to prove one way or another if i got taken...links to articles would be appreciated or if not who i can contact to get som answers

It's a penny stock? I can't even find a symbol for it. No info on Durell and assoc. either. Most likely you've been scammed. Shortly you will get a call from another scam company offering to unload your shares. Do your self a favor an hang up on them and don't get scammed a 2nd time. These guys know what they are doing.

I don't get this!

The person called has all the advantages. Just say "Sorry, not interested" and hang up.

What is so difficult?

Sorry, but you have got scammed. The money you paid has been stolen and the shares you've bought are worthless.

Bear in mind that you will now be on the 'marks list', ie somebody who is easily taken in. So you'll be getting calls from people (probably the same scammers) in the future offering you big money for your shares or trying to sell you other 'get rich easy' ideas. ALL OF THEM, repeat ALL OF THEM are scammers, however nice they are and believable they sound. Do business with them and 100% your money will be stolen from you.

Sorry to sound harsh, but the scammers are nice to you but steal your money, I'm hard but if you listen to me you'll keep your money safe. Good luck.

If you bought shares from someone who phoned you then you were scammed, I wouldn't even have to check the name of the company to know that. You have to realise these guys are criminals, they never had an office in Toronto and the names they gave you were false. They have disappeared with your money but they will be back, next time they will use a different company name and they will attempt to steal more money from you. If you fall for that they will be back again and again until you are broke.

If you are in the UK report it to Operation Archway at City of London police and also report it to the FSA. Look at both of their websites and you will see the links.

The lure of easy money makes even smart people do dumb things.

Peter

I disagree that it is easy to get money from smart people by cold calling. By other tricks, yes. I've been caught by a hard luck story more than once. Not by much, though.
The last was 10 euros to a guy who said he had locked himself out while I was on a Sunday morning walk. That is not an insinuation that I am smart. :D

My grandchildren have taught me a lot! You'd be surprised at the hard luck stories that they cook up for me!

He can consider himself lucky. Ten times that amount has been quoted on "Boilerroom scans" thread.

The average loss is £20,000 I believe, however it's not unusual to hear of people losing 100k plus. The bigger sums are normally a result of people being caught by several follow up scams over the period of a few years. Someone on the Spiriton Media thread recently admitted to losing around 100k. I think the most I heard of was £1.5 million.

I saw Boiler room in my early teens. An excellent education in how not to invest(y)

Im not judging, but I can't understand why people buy anything over the phone from people that call you out of the blue. I always operate on the basis that if a company has a product or service worth having, I will find them rather than them finding me.

Ive come across quite a few people who have been victims of boiler room scams. The strange thing is that many of them are intelligent and well educated, it never ceases to amaze me how they think it's a good idea to send 10k to a foreign bank account based on a phone call. I've also met others that were so thick that the only thing that surprised me was how they were ever able to gather up that much money in the first place.

Unfortunately, I too have been scammed by the firm Durell and Associates in the purchase of shares in a company called Northwind Ethanol. I have contacted an attorney and we are in the process of investigating who all is involved in order to go after their financial holdings. We also are working to have criminal charges brought against these individuals. I will not rest until justice has been served one way or another.

If you have the names of the individuals and they are traceable, that is something, I suppose, but it is likely to be an expensive and weary journey for you.

I don't know much but there are those like Anley and Pboyles who have been into this for years and might be able to link you to someone of use. I hope so, anyway.

Good luck.
