I've always wondered what I would do with a million dollars of free money. I am going to start a Journal at this site and log my fake portfolio using CANSLIM. It will be simple and I will hold between 0-10 stocks at any one time based on the current market conditions. Everyone can see how good or bad I am at this. Of course, it is more difficult with real money. But if one can't do it with play money, then one shouldn't try with real money.

Feel free to comment here or in the journal if you have a question or wonder what I am doing. This isn't textbook CANSLIM as the world doesn't offer textbook CANSLIM scenarios. Although I don't have a million dollars, I plan to buy/sell most of the stocks I add to this portfolio. Since I don't have a million dollars I will probably have more stocks in here than I currently own. Today I own all that are in the journal, but I don't play to hold 10 stocks with my real money.

Updated Journal

I have been making entries in my journal if anyone wants to comment/discuss these buys and sells.

Holding Mostly Cash Now

I'm holding all cash except for a full position in BOOM. Next go-round I am looking for lower float stocks and putting more money into each winner. Spreading the money out (even with only 6 stocks) isn't that great - unless I find 6 good looking candidates.

I also plan to take larger positions on the initial move and sell the excess at 20-25% up in all cases.

BOOM and DNA doing nothing wrong at this point so I am holding them thru whatever correction the market brings. I am not looking to buy anything else for a while.

I think it would be much easier to place the following trades and hold them over a one year period to see how it performs, assuming $1,000,000 capital:

Buy Diamond Trust at price $105, 1000 shares
Buy Diamond Trust at price $100, 2000 shares
Buy Diamond Trust at price $95, 4000 shares

It saves time and expense in monitoring the market.

Ok, well see how that would have turned out with the prices from the beginning of May when that market turned.

You can't look at it from the beginning of May, you examine it by placing the orders now when the prices are higher.

Not sure that makes any sense. The market is about to correct and most of my money is in cash and I will obviously outperform the correction. I thought you were suggesting that buying the indices would provide equal or better return to a CANSLIM portfolio.

Sold Positions

Interesting that most of the stocks I sold (some for a loss) are up from my buy point quite a lot. I am up over 21% for the year and have never been fully invested. It appears I need to look into a re-buy methodology for stocks I sell. I really can't complain about the current rules, though. ;)
