A windows update has just done this to my computer. Everything that had a white background is now black. Photos, icons etc still display as per normal.

How do I get my laptop back to normal?

I'm searching the web right now, but not having any luck, and I know there are quite a few tech savvy guys here.

Cheers

Check your connections first.

Unplug and replug - PC to VDU connection.

Power off and power back on.

You can also restart your OS press F8 or F10 as it is coming up and choose to start in last known good configuration option somewhere....

Thanks. Right now it's decided to scan and repair my c drive on a restart.

Very strange.

You could restore it...click on start button ( bottom left ) then all programs>Accessories>System Tools>system Restore. You can restore your pc back to a date prior to the windows update, i.e. yesterday if that restore point is available.
Also turn off automatic updates so it wont install again.

Sorry, forgot to mention I am running the disaster that is Windows 8.

Looking into suggestions now. Thanks for those.

Is it the same in all browsers?

How weird :)

In Firefox for example, if you click Tools --> Options --> Content --> Colours

the text is set to Black and the background set to white, right? Or you have allowed pages to choose their own colours.

First things I would do:

1. Clear each browser cache

2. Clear all .tmp files - start > search > for files & folders > all files & folders: type ".tmp" without quotes.
Delete everything that comes up in that window.
Don't worry, they are all temporary files, but malware could be using .tmp extension.
Also check and delete:
C:\WINDOWS\Temp - folder contents only
C:\Documents and Settings\PC name\Local Settings\Temp - folder contents only

3. Try booting into safe mode:
http://www.howtogeek.com/107511/
From the sound of things, you are already at that stage anyway?
If you get into safe mode, problem still present?

4. Hmm... happens in all browsers?
https://www.google.co.uk/#q=black+browser+windows+bug
Use google search term:
black browser windows bug
and add your graphics chipset, or driver version, or even both together.
See what comes up.

5. As others suggested, try system restore.

6. To prevent this kind of thing in future, get this:
http://www.symantec.com/en/uk/produ...s/buy.jsp?pcid=pcat_business_cont&pvid=1601_1
Create a hard drive image and backup to DVD or USB stick.
Any future trouble, cloned image is restored in a few minutes.
Much better than windows restore.

Nice one chaps. Appreciate the input. Issue solved after a system restore(y)

Good to hear, still worth getting this though:

Windows restore might not clear the next problem.

Its not comprehensive enough.

Yeah, I will most likely do that LV.

I only just got around this week to getting a UPS for my trading PC. I've been very complacent given what I have at risk. That's often what happens I guess until the worst happens.

Same here, I learnt the hard way with win98 - you think win8 is bad.
98 was something else entirely...

BTW - if you clone the hard drive, it will clone everything including data.
Best to split data and OS:
http://www.disk-partition.com/windows-8/partition-hard-drive-windows-8.html
Data into new D:\ drive partition.
Then just clone C:\ win8 OS partition - quicker and smaller restore file then.

There goes that lazy Sunday afternoon:LOL:

The trading PC is Win7 thankfully, which I've been very impressed with. Even after XP.

I should have just about all my bases covered with regards to potential disasters/ failures very soon, so that's good.

Cheers for the links.

I don't see any advantage in splitting a single physical drive into two virtual drives. Under the old FAT16 system there were partition limits and an advantage because you ended up with smaller cluster sizes, but since FAT32 and NTFS there is no real advantage. If your hard drive fails you lose everything.
