Time and sales

From Traderpedia

Definition:
The actual time and price of transactions as they occur.

Time and sales (T&S) is a record of trades that shows trade price, time of trade, whether the trade was executed at the bid or offer and the size of the trade.

Time and sales can be useful for gauging the strength and potential of a move to continue. For instance, if a chart shows a breakout from consolidation T&S can help show whether the interest in new prices is genuine or merely a stop run that will peter out swiftly. Large trades going through on the offer can be a good sign, whereas lots of small lot trades could be buy stops being soaked up by a large bidder who is selling in preparation for a breakout failure. Every situation is different but T&S can be a useful too for confirmation. The study of T&S is known as tape reading.
