Counterparty

Definition:
The opposite party in a bilateral agreement, contract, or transaction. The counterparty to a buyer is the seller, and vice versa.


In buying or selling futures contracts, the counterparties are the opposing sides of each trade and from whose margin account the gains or losses from open positions are credited to or debited from.
