Stock markets were originally open-outcry, with trade occurred on the floor of a stock exchange between individuals face-to-face. In places like the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) this continues to be the case. Increasingly, however, modern stock trading is done via electronic exchanges, with buying and selling occuring through real-time matching of buy and sell orders.

Aside from standard buying and selling, there are a couple of additional strategies.
