Stamp duty

Definition:
UK governement duty imposed on some share and property purchases.


The stamp duty is currently levied at the rate of 0.5% for UK stocks and 1% for stocks registered in the Irish Republic. There is no stamp duty imposed on UK citizens if they buy stocks from other countries. There is also no stamp duty on derivative transactions.
