The Federal Reserve System, also known as the Federal Reserve or The Fed, is the central banking system of the United States. It is comprised of a central Board of Governors (located in Washington, D.C.) and twelve regional Federal Reserve Banks located in major cities across the country.

Role of the Fed

The main tasks of the Federal Reserve are:

  • Supervise and Regulate banks
  • Implement Monetary Policy by buying and selling U.S. Treasury Bonds
  • Maintain a strong payments system
