Technical Problem - help / ideas urgently wanted

I am receiving live data from IQ Feed and viewing it through QuoteTracker.

Unfortunately the data is not updating in QuoteTracker and my charts are not therefore working.

I think I have established that there is no problem with QT or IQFeed so the problem presumably lies within my own system / home network.

Could this be something to do with my internet connection, firewall, viruses etc etc...

Any ideas or suggestions warmly welcomed because right now I cannot trade.

Is this a new problem, by which I mean was everything working ok, and now it isn't, or have you just started using IQfeed, or QT or both?

No, I have been using them both for quite a long time and this problem just started last Thursday.

I presume from your first post.....
I think I have established that there is no problem with QT or IQFeed
.....that this means IQFeed is not experiencing any probs, QT on the other hand, may have problems you are unaware of, a recent update may have caused a problem, such as corrupted a file. does QT connect to the server ok, what sort of bandwidth does it say it is using?

As a late stage solution you may want to copy and save somewhere any profile, and setting folders the program has (I am not too familiar with this program) and try an uninstall / re-install.
But ahead of that when I did look at it I came across this forum, where you might ask, you're prolly ware of it but just in case
http://www.forum.qtusers.com/
Could this be something to do with my internet connection, firewall, viruses etc etc...
All of these things could have an effect, but in relation to internet conection and firewall something would have to have changed recently since you were using it all together b4
It is possible that a virus or spyware could wreak all sorts of havoc, should run scans of your system perhaps as a starting point.

1. I have talked to other users of the IQFeed / QT Combo and they are not experiencing problems. Hence my conclusion that the problem lies with me.

2. I have 5 computers networked in my house. My son is the resident " network expert" and he may well have changed things. Dunno exactly but I will be talking with him later.

3. The bandwidth number on the QT page keeps changing. Sometimes it is 5224 or 35.6k or even zero. Not sure what this means.

4. Wasn't aware of that forum at all but I'll take a look at it.

Thanks for your time.

Have you tried switching off all the PC's except yours and if so does it make a difference?

Are there any Peer-2-Peer applications running on any PC's downloading/uploading files which could be hogging bandwidth?

My son just told me has downloaded Lime Wire over the past few days.

He is now deleting it so we will see if that was the problem.

Later...... it wasn't the problem.

As I said earlier I am not fully familiar with this program's habits, though I did play around with it a few months back so I have a basic awareness of it. I'd be surprised that the bandwidth indicator would drop to zero during the trading day, that would suggest that there is some interuption to the connection.
I have it on my old laptop, so I will try and play around with it over the next couple of days and see if I can come up with anything. If you resolve thissue in the meantime please let me know

Select menus

Start > Run > type CMD and press ENTER key.

type command

ping www.bbc.co.uk -t

you should get continuous replies...

Reply from 212.58.224.89: bytes=32 time=37ms TTL=247
Reply from 212.58.224.89: bytes=32 time=42ms TTL=247

time=37 milliseconds tells you the transfer times.

If you are getting

Reply from 212.58.224.89: bytes=32 time=40ms TTL=247
Reply from 212.58.224.89: bytes=32 time=39ms TTL=247
Reply from 212.58.224.89: bytes=32 time=42ms TTL=247
Request timed out.
Reply from 212.58.224.89: bytes=32 time=76ms TTL=247

If you get frequent Request time outs then you have a connection problem.

============

Also, type the following command at your DOS command prompt again...

C:\Whateverfolder>netstat -a

Active Connections

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State
TCP g270-optiplex:epmap g270-optiplex:0 LISTENING
TCP g270-optiplex:microsoft-ds g270-optiplex:0 LISTENING
TCP g270-optiplex:59591 g270-optiplex:0 LISTENING

UDP g270-optiplex:1025 *:*
UDP g270-optiplex:1046 *:*

You should see an established connection to your provider like

4625 www.alphatrade.com:1580 ESTABLISHED

Good luck...

Ok guys, I am on the verge of quitting this cheapo QT / IQFeed combo. I guess you get what you pay for and in this case it is obviously not much.

Time to move on I think.

What are the best alternatives for day trading the US markets ?

Esignal ?

??????????

I sent an email to IQ Feed telling them that since they couldn't seem to identify my problems, that I would be effectively going elsewhere and asked them when my current subscription period expired.

They have not yet answered but when I logged back in shortly after, the whole thing was working beautifully.

A very sweet coincidence or was somebody not telling me something ???

If nothing changed at your end then it must have been something to do with theirs.

Couple of more checks you can do is

START > RUN > type EVENTVWR

On the applications / system tabs you should see all errors and warnings and information based events on your XP system. See if anything relates to your application.

You could check your firewall see if the application is allowed through. You can also check to see if you are getting replies back from them using Etherreal but that may be a little to complicated to trouble shoot as its all to do with IP address, packets and ports etc etc.

I'd guess it was something at their end.

Most odd, it is possible the problem was specific to your account, some sort of administrative error that has now been brought to their attention, otherwise I don't see what problem would have been at their end that was not affecting lot's of other clients
Does IQFeed not have some sort of discussion forum, it may be useful to know if it does for future reference.
In any case, glad it seems to be working agin, technical probs are very frustrating.
I notice on QT that under File > Select Quote server, you have the option to select from another server if more than one is provided, often times there may be a problem that is limited to one server, this has cropped up with eSignal.

Anyone ever heard of Port Throttling ?
Yes Pipex have been accused of that recently, it is mainly geared towards the ports commonly used by p2p networks

It's just that my son says he has been doing that recently and he thinks maybe it could have had something to do with my problem.

Dunno.

Yes, it's supposed to be a feature where by you control flow of traffic based on interface or service port.

The problem with users of p2p download sites is that they leave their machines on downloading all sorts of films, music and other rubbish which they never watch but collect like digital magpies. These can be in 100s of Gb. Smart ones leave their machines on overnight but so do people in Australia. Hence the problem.

These usually get applied on freebee or cheap ISPs supplying ADSL lines. Obviously at the end of the day there is no such thing as free lunch. You pay one way or another.

May be worth asking your ISP, though I don't think that should be the problem, if what I've read of it so far is true. The figures I have seen quoted were for a 20K/sec restriction to these ports, I would have thought that would be plenty, I could be wrong, but apart from the odd burst perhaps around FOMC release, I wouldn't have thought you'd need much more than half of that. If they were however simply disrupting the connection on these ports causing a re-logon, assuming that is possible, that would fit.

Excessive overnight p2p downloading.

Fits my 18 year old perfectly.
