Leased lines

I've just been looking into upgrading my current 2MB broadband connection with a leased line. Does anyone know if there is any difference between Bulldogs 1 Mb line and the same thing from BT Radianz. The price difference is huge (nearly £500 a month), why is this ?

My 1/2 Mb broadband was great, then they upgraded me to 2Mb for free, and it drops out quite a lot and I have to redial. I'm thinking of asking for a free downgrade to 1Mb.

With a leased line you get an actual length of copper wire they come and connect up to the exchange that carries only the computer signal as opposed to broadband that shares your voice and computer on one line. The "modem" for a leased line will be more expensive as it's not mass market and the setup may be harder ( it's years since I had to deal with leased line so things may have changed ).

One advantage of a leased line is that it is symetric, so you can go as fast up as you can down, but for trading I don't see any advantage in it.

I think you need to ask yourself what's wrong with broadband, and how leased line would solve that before paying the extra $$$$.

Has anyone got any ideas of pricing for a leased line?
When I checked a few years ago "they" were quoting 20k GBP p.a

Sorry, I didnt make it very clear what I was asking. Bulldog offer a 1Mb leased line for £250 a month . BT Radianz also offer a 1Mb leased line but its £725 a month (30 miles from London). Are they the same thing ?

Last time I checked 2MBPS DIA via NTL was about £500 a month.
This was fibre to my house and outside London.

Cost can vary quite a bit depending on whether it is just dedicated internet access or a fully managed point to point connection and on the type of SLA.

Rather than a leased line I would look to find a reliable broadband ISP and get a static IP address. Then, if you don't already have one, get an Ethernet based DSL or Cable router. USB modems consume CPU cycles on the PC and are inherently less reliable.

Such an "optimised" broadband setup should give you most of the advantages of a leased line for a fraction of the cost.

http://www.ispreview.co.uk is a good un-biased place to find out about the performance of different ISPs.

Mattybouy,

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. Bulldog seem to offer a decent range of products , but at the end of the day the most important point is that the line is reliable I suppose, better to have a few sluggish days than be disconnected.

resilient

if ur in 0207 radianz will give u complete resiliency provided you have colt and bt in ur building i.e. u'll get 2 lines as standard and access to a financial community spread acros the globe consisting of some 15000 connections

For a price.
It's the best solution for connectivity but it does cost.
