Journal/diary software?

Hi,

My trading records currently consist of a Traders spreadsheet, an Equity Curve, done in Excel, and a paper Diary.
I would now like to have the diary on the computer as well.

Does anybody have experiences with Journal software?

What software can you recommend?

Any specifically aimed at traders?

I don't need anything too complex, just something that allows me to record my thoughts and copy & paste charts to.

Kind regards

Marcus.

Thank you for the reply.

I considered T2W Journals but decided I didn't want an online journal.

As for Word. I liked the idea of using Word but I couldn't see how I could keep an orderly filing system. The way I looked at it I would have to save individual pages in a folder....too cumbersome.

Preferably I would like to be able to easily access different dates and possibly scroll page by page, similiar to Microsft Works Calander.

hmmmm
insert html tags to jump to relevant sections that you have highlighted.
View word doc as web page and that should sort it

.

Marc,

You could knock one up in Access within an 1 hour and it will allow you to organise it how you want.

Do you have MS Outlook? There is a ready made journal in it! Outlook will automatically link to excel and word if needed. It does just what I want as a trading diary. Drag and drop - cut and paste etc

Somebody else mentioned Outlook.

As I swing/position trade I need a layout that enables me to easily switch from one date to another?

I need to have a link on the before chart/page so I can quickly link to the after chart/page.

Hope this make sense?

Marcus.

This may not help you then, but Word does have a search facility.

If you start each day with a date heading, you can then search for it in the future!

Im sure there are multiple functions that most don't even know about.

Consider this: on average, 80% of a software applications features remain unused and unknown to its users. I read that in a Gartner report. That will apply to Outlook too! Thanks Ron, I never realised that Outlook had that feature.

in outlook you can easily switch from one date to another.

With regard to what you said about cross checking charts all you have to do is create a consitent naming/date system for the items you wish to view/x refer and use the outlook search facility accordingly

You can post all of these in a word document and lift them into the search frame

The beauty of outlook is that it is an email client, contact list, calender, notes, to do list and journal all in one - but I'm biased

OneNote in Office 2003 is just the job, but upgrading to this is probably an expensive option for a journal that can be created
in other programmes.

Thanks

Thank you kindly to all those who responded.

I need to buy Office 2003 so I'll be able to look at the suggestions offered above.

Also, I've downloaded a programme which pretty much does what I want if I don't like Office:

There's a program on download.com called iDailyDiary which is you can download for free. You can copy pictures in with ease and the setup's nice easy to use. Might be worth a look if you've got the time.

Thanks for the information.

I ended up purchasing the journal mentioned above which is perfect for my needs.

Thanks again

Well OneNote on Office2003 is the perfect thing for me.

Damn that was probably the best and usefull program added to the MS Office since 1998 :cheesy:

OneNote is really good, even Audio record capabilities so you can keep your voice-record diary.. and virtual pen sketches..

It might be even better if installed on a Pocket PC

My dream would be to have a PocketPC with Wi-Fi, a good trading program and use One Note for notes,etc... trading anywhere, anyplace, realtime must be a dream :D or Not ;)

Great!

Thanks for your information about iDailyDiary. It is a great tool as a journal for traders like me. I had found out that it can have many tabs or pages for the same date. Will be great for my trading plans, charts...etc. :D

There is the iDiary tour http://www.splinterware.com/tour/idailydiary.htm

Trade Log / Journal software I've turned up

I have a large unlined notebook to jot notes down during the day, and transfer relevant ones to a custom spreadsheet after market hours along with the days trades. In investigating off-the-shelf alternatives I turned up these three, none of which I can vouch for personally, but look good (and more extensive than my simple Excel capabilities).
Trade The Markets Carter has one:

TradingSpreadsheets.com specializes in ...guess what:
http://tradingspreadsheets.com/
Also, don't laugh, on Ebay I found a seller named
drsoy
who will do custom Excel work for $30/hr

Please share your experiences if you try any of these!
Cheers,
Brookwood

Glad to help. I recommend a note taking software called AllMyNotes Organizer. You can capture all of your thoughts, ideas, and inspirations, into a single place.

It has nice interface, powerful search options and strong security.
More info: http://www.vladonai.com/allmynotes_product_about.php.
By the way, it's available in freeware edition! :)
