2007 - Qualifications for roles - it is posted on the "getting Started Link" too but more people seem to read this... please can some of you established people help out???

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone,

I have just signed up and read a lot about getting started as i am in the boat of "getting ready to start"... I am keen to hear of anyone who has got into Trading or Inter Dealer Broking in the last 12 months to give me their assessment of the market now - as opposed to 2-3 years ago when some of the posts were written.

If i tell you where i am currently then please can someone give me a realistic view of the way forward, qualifications to take, type of people to approach, that type of thing...???

- 23 years old
- 3x A-C Alevels
- 2.2 BScEcon degree
- Been Recruiting for 2.5 years straight out of Uni, been developing business, closing candidates and clients, have my own personal Share portfolio, keen on banking/trading/broking etc, and just looking for a way in. In truth i was naive as a youngster and got all my education without much (if any) applied study - just turned up to lessons/lectures etc and sat the exams... poor i know but i was lazy and arrogant!

Now i have looked into doing an IAQ and then applying to every "junior/entry" level role out there... i think my chances in IDB are better than Trading because unless i can get an interview and woo the line managers i know trading is for Red Brick Uni guys...

Can anyone offer a potential improvement or even an agreement on my plan - which is IAQ, IDB back office... then move up??

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

cheers

does anyone feel that they have anything to give??

Advice on the best route to market for young hungry banking wanabees??

There must be somoen with something to say!!!!

I have but there is nothing that specifically goes into what qualifications are needed/desired/preferential to each area of the banking world... If i rephrase the question like:

- Will an IAQ do me any harm if i want to eventually get a job as a IDB or Trader?

That kind of thing... or the value of an IAQ vs a CFA vs IMQ etc etc

someone must know their merits?

Call me silly but......

Cant you , especially you, use your recruiting skills to find out what the client wants, directly ? Sounds too simple but I'd phone the bugggers up.......

good luck, just thought you might be able to recruit yourself into a position, and take a fee :p luvly jubbly......

this has to be the least helpful post in history guys... thanks for nothing.

I recruit for the telecoms market hence my need for a bit... just a bit of guidance and i thought to myself here is a forum DESIGNED for this kind of question to to be answered... i'm guessing by the lack of help that either all you guys do is trade out your homes and don't know the answeres; or you don't want to help because you can't be bothered... or are really cliquey about who you want in the crowd... doubt i'll get an answer to this either though to be fair!

What makes you think you cant phone them up directly for advice ? it must be too simple ?

wow... you are a really helpful guy... i call either
a) a receptionist who tells me it's a no names policy
b) a line head who tells me he doesn't have time (but who also wouldn't know the pros/cons because he hires... he's never been through the process from the other side and tried to get into THIS market at THIS time)
c) An HR advisor/manager who tells me to send in my CV for the next time they are looking...
d) i call training companies who tell me that they can't advise me on what course for what roles... they just try and sell me anything and everything that seems to match...

you may be able to tell that i've tried your blatant advice and got just about nowhere... so to all other people who work for a tier1 IB or IDB please can someone provide advice on at least a starting point... here is the question...

Is an IAQ worth taking? and what sort of progression can it offer, or will it pigeon hole me into an area that will make no money and give me no prospects?

Bear in mind i have to pay for it myself... and i'm not rich...

OK, try running that one on option C . Seems too simple but.. worth a go I'd say.

look you are not answering the questions so don't bother. i don;t want to hear from you...
the HR i have approached don't know because they aren't bankers... they send CVs to line managers and conduct interviews to make sure that the candidates are not mental...

If somone here knows about worthwhile certs then please post. I know how to make a bloody job application... and when i'm ready i will... but a CV with no financial experience or qualifications is worthless... i know that... so can someone just agree or disagree with an IAQ and tell me why.

thanks...

Greedy by name...

Not exactly endearing yourself to the people who might help you, are you? Actually you're right but rather than your pejorative view, the whole point of T2W is that it is actually predominantly a web-site used by those who trade from home rather than employed professionals, although there are a number of the latter that visit here. So basically, rather than heap abuse on the good members of this parish, I might chuck it back at you for not bothering to find a more likely source of answers on the net. I'm a bit bored answering 'what career' questions on this forum so I'm sure as hell not going to bother replying to someone as arrogant as you appear to be.

Yes I can see why ......

Good luck chief, I'm sure your answer will appear in good time ...

Keep knocking them doors.

Greedy,

Look here:

http://www.sii.org.uk/web5/infopool.nsf/HTML/qQualifications

I would suggest the Certificate Programme, specifically the Certificate in Derivatives (includes the compulsory Financial Regulation), then the Diploma (various modules - you choose).

Don't concentrate on big names - the smaller houses/retail side may be more attainable.

Good luck (you owe me a beer and 10% of future earnings when you make it big).

Grant.

Your going to need to get some experience on your CV somehow mate or some serious kick ass financial unique selling point, my boss was going through CV's last week (job is on efinacial) and I saw the brutal way is which one CV ends up in the bin and one in the maybe pile - speed read in about 30 seconds.

to quote him "...those CVs were 99% ****e, 1% right..."

Greedy,

Despite your lack of market experience I reckon “developing business, closing candidates and clients” is a significant asset – means you can sell and blluhsti.

Re PualoP’s remarks re cv’s, this is true for the larger houses where every man and his dog applies. To repeat, go for the small operators – less competition, less up their own arses. And never give up.

Grant.

Thanks guys i appreciate your input and some guidance. I also apologise to those guys who trade at home and who wouldn;t know about the career route. I will keep asking the questions and just go for a cert and try "knocking on the doors"!

I'll keep you posted on progress for others who are also interested in career routes...

thanks again chaps / chapesses!

cheers

I'm not a 23 year old. I'm a 75 year old.

Why don't you get an interview with a suitable recruitment agency? I left the sea at 31 years of age with a Master Mariner's certificate. I went to a recruiting agency and was lucky enough to find a sympathetic interviewer. I didn't last too long and I did something else, in the end, ending up abroad, but you are younger than I was, have had a good education and time is on your side.

A nephew came out of university and, after doing some commision work for charity, getting contributions by telephone, saved up enough to make a round the world trip. His father went into orbit, but now this young fellow, into his thirties, has made more money than any of us.

Whatever you do, good luck with it and I hope that I have helped a little.

browse this one. i am sure your answers should be there, particularly if you want to go to a firm that is global, as their HR practices tend to be homogeneous and not US based, etc.

when i graduated from Business School, it was a must for guides.

Seems like you have no relevant experience and below standard qualifications for entry directly into a front office role (or even a back office role at a decent Investment Bank). Best bet would be to tackle it from a different angle. By far the easiest job to get would be temping in a back office role and then go from there. But be under no illusions - you will be a long way from pushing the buy & sell buttons whatever you decide to do....
