Tony Hayward relieved of managerial duties

The guy went off and did his own thing on a weekend and then got papped. What's he supposed to do, sit in his bedroom until the media allow him to come out?

Crazy world. Yachting now classified as PR disaster? Media and readers of idiotic news should get some perspective on the difference between doing your job well/badly and the right to privacy.

Come on. His performance in front of the committee was robotic at best, insincere at worst. He should at least lie low, not attend a regatta in which HIS yacht is sailing. It's PR lunacy, coming the day after the hearing.

Yes, he should sit in his bedroom until things have calmed down. OR maybe do something about the spill??

I'm not condoning his rather crap management of either the circumstances that created the spill or his continued gaffs in his professional capacity. Sure his appearance on Thursday was dire and frankly the guy should have been removed from the limelight sooner rather than later.

But I don't buy US political rhetoric from an administration that is struggling, nor am I interested in what he gets up to on his weekends. If anything, both these things only diminish and trivialise the problem.

Like what? Drink it?

I must confess some schadenfreude at the entire episode. Americans finally seeing what their rampant corporatism does to the third world every day.

P.S. Bhopal.

Bhopal, Union Carbide. Piper Alpha, Occidental (or was it Accidental). The ugly truth is now rearing its head.

America consumes 20 pct of the world's energy - this is nuts, by any yardstick.

Obama is truly floundering on this one.. I've heard that he's concerned it may become his "Hurricane Katrina". His performance has been borderline embarrassing ---- ok so Tony Hayward went to a yacht race, how many rounds of golf has the Great One played in the last month or so... !! Petty finger pointing and point scoring, and meanwhile thousands of barrels of oil are spewing into the Gulf.. this is a horror story.

So true.

Lot of original Obama supproters are calling for George Bush back. Not sure thats any better but it just shows the Presdient's job isn't as easy as people think. Sometimes the worst thing that can happen is you get what you wish for. Obama is more worried about fixing his image then what happens to the American people. Sad state of affairs here.

There was so much negative comment on Cameron before he even became PM. My response was - you have to wait and see.. he may turn out to be a great PM (who knows?). The flipside of that is Obama, who was almost 100 pct likely not to live up to the pre-election hype.

I recall early on his grandiose references to being "bipartisan". He has been anything but.

Most people in the UK won't recall his infamous line when asked about the Henry Gates episode. He didn't have a teleprompter for this one, so fluffed it. He said "I don't know all the facts, but the Cambridge police acted stupidly". He then went on to elaborate how black people are indiscriminately picked on by police. It was the first major chink in his armour, from which he was forced into an embarrassing climb-down.

Hayward was abominable last week.

He behaved like the scientist that he is and not like a tough businessman.

It amazes me that a scientist has been promoted to such a level within such a massive multinational company, a role which must demand the utmost of any businessman's talents and capabilities.

Hayward is a geologist and it shows.

It must be embarrassing for BP to have this PR disaster heading up their organisation and leading them to the brink of disaster and floundering like a fish out of water as he does so.

Mind you, I don't have much time for that bunch of blood thirsty Americans either. They have spent most of their entire history f*cking up the rest of the world and now what has gone around has come back to hit them in the face.

Sweet retribution some might say and I wouldn't necessarily disagree.

Obama and his crew at the Sh*ite House are pathetic and are obviously trying to save their own asses.

Pathetic, on both sides ... the whole lot of them.

It's the wildlife that I feel sorry for, not some bunch of bloated, bigmouthed foul rednecks.

i think i'd rather have a geologist at the helm trying to block a leaking well than "suit"

Scientists are good for scientific positions.

This twerp has tried and failed to be a businessman.

Disaster.

They need a businessman to kick scientific ass so to speak and to defend the company against the attacks of a bunch of rabid cowboys.

Scientists are no good at kicking ass .... they are usually too far up their own to be aware of anything else.

That's why he went to the yacht race. The man really is a clod, astonishing.

but OK for Obama to take wife out on *date* and play a round of golf? You me, the fully paid up members of the wide awake club know what's gone on here and how the future unravels for BP and Hayward...Russia's position is interesting...I expect a bid from China with the Russians backing it as a jv (somehow) before (or until such time) the US introduce an emergency bill to nationalise (confiscate) all rights and rigs in *their* waters...

Yes they (the US) have to spend of foreign crusades for the black stuff, but every little helps particulary if you keep what you convince yourself is rightly yours and 'sell' the confiscation on the basis of environmentalism..;)

not sure how makign $6.6bn in Q1 is failing to be a businessman. do you want Mandelson or Campbell in charge? They'd be good at the PR bit.....

Far too much being made of the supposed pr gaffs..How could anyone fight and win against the pr machine of a sophist govt? These guys *sell* wars, mayhem and murder as being 'just' ffs... The US spin machine (with instructions from the very top) obviously went into overdrive fairly quickly. Even if it lagged initially once up to speed there is no way BP could win versus Hallibrutal, Transocean, the US govt ....

Made despite, not because of Hayward, I'm sure.

He's no relation to Justin Hayward of Moody Blues fame is he ?

i think the shareholders might have an issue if they thought they could have made more.

doubt he's a as good at singing. might be a karaoke superstar, who knows?
