Hello good folks of T2W.

I have been with PC Tools Spyware Doctor and my subscription is up for
renewal in 3 days. My renewal fee is £39.99 of which i have paid for the last
4 years with no real problems.

I was wondering if there is anything better for the same price or do some traders
on here use the free stuff and never see any virus's or problems.

If you do what programs are you using and in what combinations. Eg: Separate spyware
and Adaware.

Thanks in advance

Ged

I use AVG free anti-virus and Zone-Alarm free firewall on my home network (5 x PCs). I recently started to route my connections through OpenDNS | Providing A Safer And Faster Internet (allows filtering of sites as well as a potential speedup of site lookup) but have never had bother with viruses or requests for annual payments.

Others say the free solutions are less than adequate but they've always worked ok for me.

update your Windows as well.. its free. windows defender is free antivirus from microsoft, need to download separately if your on xp, vista already included.

At the Mo I'm currently using avira anti-vir for my anti-virus..and comodo firewall...

I use several heavy on demand scanners these are things such as Spybot Search and Destroy as mentioned before.

The heavy on-demand scanners I use, include Ad-aware the FREE version! do not use the paid as it will probably clash with Avira. Spybot Search and Destroy and Malware-bytes Anti-Malware. Make sure none of these On-demand scanners are run together at one time.

I hate paying for Anti-Virus... After all the best things in life are free!

"Malwarebytes anti-malware" is the best free anti-spyware tool bar none. When you download it rename the .exe file to something else, run through the setup, update it (it will run through the setup again) and do a smart scan. If you use a hosts file, it may detect this, just unselect this when you do a repair, if you're sure you use it. Smart Scan probably takes about 20-30 mins. I use this all the time, I swear by it.

or you can leave windows and use linux without having any AV/spyware/trojans etc...

unless there's some specific application you need that doesn't have a linux equivelant.
