Why are you a trader ?

Im reading "The New Market Wizards" at the moment, and I think that a comment by Monroe Trout sums up exactly why I love trading... (page 159 if you have the book)

" When I was a kid, I loved to play games. Now I get to play a very fun game, and I'm handsomely paid for it. I can honestly say there isn't anything else I would rather be doing."

gamma, why do you need 6am starts ? surely not all trades need to be taken then ?

London session opens at 8, most traders will be in around the 6.30 mark to prepare for the day.

surely not all trades need to be taken then ?

What do you mean by this? You wouldn't be trading until 8, unless you were trading the Tokyo session. You don't come in to work and place all your trades for the day then sit back...

yes, mainly its the monetary and risk/reward thing as a trader. but i also wanted to be able do other things by the time i have achieved financial freedom...

i wont quit until the day i achieve financial freedom. thatll only happen when hell freezes over.
To some that may mean one doesnt make any money. To others that means the sky is not the limit.
I choose the later.
grrrrr

Just said this on another thread, but for me the financial motivation is far from top of the list. Of course we all want to be rich, but more important for me is to enjoy my job - having just left uni, I'm likely going to be spending over 100,000 hours at work. Would I rather be rich at the end of all this, or content? At the end of the day, you can't take it with you.

When I see 'safer', my mind reads 'dull'. I want my job to be something that I can't let go of, not a situation where I sit and watch the clock until 5pm. I follow the financial markets because it's my passion; I can't imagine going home with a copy of 'Tax Returns Monthly' and feverishly reading it cover to cover. If trading happens to make me a rich man along the way, then that will be a bonus.

most people that don't have a clue assume the FTSE is the only hours that are worked.

*sorry SL-my post is an implication that you don't have a clue-that was not supposed to come across that way.

inceidentally my markets are 24 hour, open at 7, 730 and 8.

No, I understand that FX is almost a 24/7 market, I was just saying that most UK traders, FX or not, are at work well before the London session opens, since the OP seemed to think that a 6am start was unusual.

Money money money... very hard not to be interested in something like trading when you're dealing with money, in my opinion... I don't think you have to start out interested, you'll become interested just by doing the job :)

Best thing I ever did was get a job as a trader---Second Best thing I ever did was quit after quite a few knackering years.

why am I a Trader ?
'cos i failed at my first choice, go-go dancer. apparently i don't have the legs for it.
but that doesn't stop me leaping up on stage whenever i get the chance

I once did a small pole dancing stint at a gentleman's club in New Zealand. It was for one evening only, and I was wearing a kilt, which was unfortunate for the punters when I flipped my legs over my head. Got a free drink out of it though, which was nice.

I now feel sick and mentally scarred :-0

I'm spoiled for choice ....

Ulster or 'Gers , County Antrim or original scottish clan......

(but 9 times out of 10, I opt for Rangers)
