I was mowing the lawn on Sunday, going up and down. My 5 year old daughter started running up and down beside me and when I neared the end, she would run ahead and shout ‘I won’. After several runs up and down, got me thinking and therefore I asked her this:

What have you won?

She replied, ‘I won’.

I then went in to work mode and said this:
You have expended more energy than me but yet achieved nothing other than self-glory. I, on the other hand have used less energy than you and have achieved cutting the grass for which both I and guests will be happy to see and walk on – It also saves it becoming a meadow.
Needless to say, she looked at me blankly for a moment then run off shouting ‘Mummy I beat Daddy’.

When mummy saw the garden, she praised and humoured my daughter for ‘winning’, however, I had the greatest satisfaction as we all admired the freshly cut grass in the sun. I also had more energy to carry on further.

She is, after all only 5 years old so I don’t expect her to understand what I am getting at. However, there are many 5 year olds out there in the world that will shout they are winning when they are actually not winning anything at all. At the end of the day they only have self-glory.

Happy trading all and good luck.

Success certainly does make one feel better.
But as you say what are the goals ?
Does "rocket man" get an inner glow of satisfaction as he watches another rocket soar into the sky ?

Hi Pat,

Very true, self glory makes one feel much better but as we all know, is worthless to anyone else. Although having said that, One of our group last Wednesday put £60 into a fruit machine, after about 20 minutes came back with a smile and £20 win, then bought a round in :) I certainly felt his 'win'.

Come on Lee -she thought she was in a race up and down the lawn and nothing to do with cutting the grass. I hope you gave her an extra slice of cake for beating slow daddy :)

No, Lee, you misunderstood her. She's already a chip off the old block traderwise. Saw you were mowing in a range. Bet she shouted "I won" when you turned round at support at the bottom of your garden and again when you turned at resistance at the top. She was calling the range tops and bottoms, nothing to do with racing you.

To be honest, if I gave her my slice of the cake, I might lose a little weight and win next time. But we all know as well as she does, that ain't happening.

Maybe next time I'll cut the grass in an Elliot wave fashion. That'll confuse her. Might p1ss off the wife though.

The biggest takeaway for me was that your daughter and wife were happy and this is the most important thing in life for me, to be happy and have a happy family... everything else is a distraction...

This is a good point, but having a happy family and having money are not mutually exclusive, in other words you can have both.

I will say this though, having money certainly keeps us all happier and healthier and that's without any doubt.

I've heard: "If your rich AND unhappy, you WON'T be any happier poor"

just what i heard :D

I liked your post but after thought the words I wrote very pertinant. So have posted them here:

This is true. Happiness has little to do with wealth. But I do know if you are happy, you are rich.

Being poor in the US is something to be ashamed of but here in Europe there is a certain solidarity amongst the poor not to be ripped off by the rich.

Absolutely, I do believe being wealthy helps a lot with being happy... no doubt about that...
