I'm thinking of joining the RMR, as I've always wondered if I'm as physically able as I think I am, not to mention I'd like to shoot some guns and go skiing once a year. There's more to it than that obviously; I was just wondering if anyone here had any experience of reserve forces, and whether they'd recommend it to someone looking for a challenge and perhaps a bit of training in self-discipline?

Cheers, SL

Have you tried the fitness routine on the actual marines website that they have a fitness regime that should build you up for the entry tests?

Oh and do you REALLY fancy a trip to Afghansitan?????????

He'll need his magic carpet to get there as the Marines don't have his special take off conveyor belt......

This will be him in his uniform when the bombs start whizzing past his head.

prolly better joining the TA as apposed to the RMR..if you wana be a marine be a marine... three of my mates are in the marines, i would have joined if it wernt for my asthma

Being physically able is one thing. Having the right mentality in a war zone is some thing else. The way things are going, even if you could get through the training, with present manpower levels, you could well end up in Afghanistan, which is more than enough of a challenge for most. Best of luck though.

Skills, i think you're living darn sarf now right ?
In which case I recommend 21 SAS.

If you're back up t'North, then it's 23 SAS.

Both Territorial squadrons accept civvies direct, without previous military experience.
SBS Reserves o.t.o.h. require previous experience.

In my experience, and from little I know of you from our brief exchanges, I think you'd be better suited to the smaller, independent, think-for-yourself role within Territorial SAS rather than the more infantry-like team ooh-hah role with RMR.

I think you'd also benefit from more specialized training and skills leverage with 21SAS than you'd get as a Marine Reservist

Join the forces if you really have the intention to serve your country, not for self pleasuring on "challenges"... there is plenty of "reality TV" cr@p out there for you to humour yourself.

Well, a bit of a mixed bag there... I think some of you have misunderstood the light-hearted nature of my original post; I gave very serious consideration to joining the Marines after University, it's not about self-pleasuring. I would very much like to serve my country in some way, and thought that it might help me develop as a person at the same time. Thanks for all (most) of your comments, I will take them under consideration.

"it's not about self-pleasuring."

That must be a relief........................
