Sorry to step on the thread, but at least it will bump you up again! I don't wear a watch, but looking at the pics... if it didn't have the name Rolex on it, would you have paid more than £100? Seems pretty ugly to me. But then, as I say, I don't wear a watch and therefore wouldn't know the difference between a Swatch and a Timex.

A company could make a watch as good as Rolex for sub £1000(see Tag Heuer), but buy a Rolex and it will only appreciate in value over time, buy a Tag and you will loose 50% of initial purchase price in a couple of years. I'm sure here more than anywhere people realise the purchase price of an asset is not necessarily related to its true underlying worth.

That I get... but surely it could actually be designed to look nice as well?

Surely beauty is in the eye of the beholder, an Explorer II is a tool watch designed for a purpose so it wouldn't be for wearing with a three piece or evening wear, but wouldn't look out of place in any form of outdoor activity (It was designed for use in places of perpetual darkness i.e cave diving or north/south of the Arctic/Antarctic circles hence the red 24h hand and 24h bezel). One wouldn't wear a Polo watch to go windsurfing or a diving watch to go pheasant shooting (Though Jackie Stewart is doing exactly in the latest issue of 'The Field') for someone who who performs any number of outdoor sports this would be a far more ideal watch than a generic Casio G-Shock or similar but it wouldn't be suited to to someone buying it as an only watch to wear in an office environment.
