I've never seen the point of this for the customer, but great cost-saving advantages for the bank.

Simplyfinance.co.uk lists the main advantages (my comments follow) -

24/7 Services: Banking online means that the banks no longer need to keep their branches open around the clock. (branches never were open round the clock because nobody needed them to be)

Monthly Statements: With online banking there is no need to visit the bank, call up the branch, or wait for a financial statement to come in the mail. (I am happy to wait for the monthly statement by post because I know what I have put in and what I've drawn out: I could get a statement from the ATM if I forget)

Cost Effective: Internet banking is very cost effective. (banking never cost me a penny anyway: how is this a benefit for the customer?)

Paperless: Internet banking allows all transactions to be done without using paper. (what dunce thinks using a PC is environmentally friendly?)

Transfer of Funds: With online banking there is no need to visit your bank to ask them to transfer funds from one account to another. (rarely have to transfer funds account to account, and its never occurred as a surprise event at 3am)

Loan Applications: Through banking on the internet any customer can apply for a loan without even having to visit their local branch. (the last thing I want from any bank is a loan)
