Fraudster pulled a fast one on me

Was working on my own yesterday evening in a new bookies shop and I got slow counted by a fraudster.

At first I wasn't worried because I never gave him the betting slip because he never gave me the money. But now I'm worried that I might get the sack over it. It was actually 2 bets at the same time... neither of which I handed over.

I'm unclear on whether I truly messed up.
The rule is, no money no bet... which in a sense I abided by... but I wonder if since I put the bet through the till, if I'll get my marching orders.

I phoned security and they confirmed that it was a fraudster. They then asked me to phone the surrounding shops to warn them, which I did. Then I informed the manager of that shop who had already left.

Anyone have any experience of this?
Still a bit early yet but I'm going to ring my own manager after 8 to seek clarification.

I went to sleep fine but then woke up with worry haha.
Slumber me must have been thinking about it all night

Surely if no money was taken for the bet, there's no bet?

Maybe you were a bit quick or distracted putting the total through the till but it wasn't money you put in the till, just the numerical total in anticipation of receiving the money. So you stopped a fraudster and saved the firm such and such £. You should be alright I'm sure.

Nowler didn't say but but if they were losing bets then the fraudster got off without paying for them.

But if they were winning bets and Nowler refused to pay out then he would have indeed saved his firm money.

Given that Nowler is worried it is probably the first case.

I didn't actually see if they were winning or losing as I called him on it before the race ended. Considering he didn't try to claim winnings though, they probably lost.

Either way he wasn't getting his slip once he turned away from the counter and locked in on the race.

I just spoke with my manager and she said that while I did mess up a bit, my job is not on the line.
I'm sure security are still going to have a word with me over this though.

Seemingly I'm not only in the clear, but me getting the shop managers position next week is still on the cards...

Sounds too good to be true, so I'm not going to count my chickens just yet. I did make it clear that I knew what and where it went wrong, as well as how to avoid it. I also spoke to the new guy about how it unfolded in an attempt to help him successfully manage his first encounter with a fraudster.

I'll update when I know more.
Fingers crossed, not that the wages get much better as shop manager. Still only 17.5k/yr basic salary... plus overtime after 37.5hrs a week... time and a half on the 6th day of a working week. No to forget the extra 5% they put on top of my 5% contribution to my pension

I do still have an interview with a lady from a college about a potential position.

You would think the management would alert staff to the ingenious tricks they try on.

hey Nowler

sorry i missed this as would have helped from the start ....as you have seen you are fine here

i hav'nt been in the bookmaking business for many years but as long as you hold yuor hand up and also try to follow the rules you will always be ok ...unless you are working for bent betting firms ...which these days thankfully are pretty rare on the high street

well done

All good buddy :)

We were told before that if we make a mistake, own up to it and we'll be likely fine... barring a really stupid or reckless mistake. Same as in all walks of life I suppose.

To be fair, they have told us about this on induction day, as well as on my second training day 4 weeks after the induction. That's how I realised what he was trying on me before I handed him his slips.

Unfortunately I wasn't sharp enough to be on alert when he was placing a large bet on dogs that were just about to go off. That there would have been a siren to someone who was more experienced.

I'll know in future... Once bitten, twice shy as someone said to me :)

I am pretty tired of the job already to be honest.
I'll take this promotion from them but there no a chance in hell that I'll stay there long enough to have manager on my c.v long enough where it will actually make a difference to a potential employer... I think 2 years is the general minimum people look for when hiring someone??

Of course I will still carry out my job with the same professional integrity as I did when I started. It's something I expect from myself and everyone else! If you dont have that, then it's time to go...

This was always going to be a temporary job but im not working as hard as I do and dealing with the crap that I have to deal with for minimum wage! Even this "manager" position (which is essentially a supervisor role really) is paying peanuts and I ain't wasting 2 years of my life on it. I have a third level degree, ambition coming out of my ears, and willing to work like hell!
I just needed a steady wage while I settled into my move to the UK.

Either they promote me to a position which pays and challenges me, or I move somewhere that will give it to me.

It's been interesting though to see gambling from various angles. I'm definitely much better off because of it.

What's the degree subject?

Almost certainly.
That was my first time in that shop, and I was on my own.
And I only started working there 6 weeks ago, so am still a little green.

Major is Psychology, Minor is Sociology.
You got a job for me buddy? :)

No not me, i'm sub contract self employed.:)

Just wondered what kind of jobs you might be looking for.

I will do a wide array of things really...
It doesnt need to be related to my degree but it would need to be an improvement on the wage I have now.

I'd be willing to work at something in the short-ish term if it pays better than this job. I'd stay longer if it pays really well (I have an investment portfolio that I want to grow), but for the really long-term, it needs to be something challenging, and something I can put my own stamp on. If that makes sense.

I'm open to learning new skills too, so if you know someone whos looking for someone to work hard and willing pay them well, give me a shout.

I'm open to relocating within the UK or worldwide :)
Gotta make up for time wasted back home.

Well, given your healthy suspicion of other people and their motives. How about Detective/ Criminal Profiler. I bet that's interesting work and there is a severe UK shortage as things stand. The Psychology and Sociology degree should be a perfect fit. I'm pretty sure they are fast tracking successful candidates currently.

That would actually be something that excites me.
I have looked into a few things along those lines but I kept getting shut down because I have not been resident here for 3 years (background checks).

I would love to play cat and mouse! And I crave a little danger...
I even have a stupid grin on my face thinking about it while I type this :cheesy:

I wanted to do my masters in forensic psychology but I got priced out of doing it unfortunately. Then I discovered trading. I did very well with my criminal, neuro and cognitive psych modules.

I could have another look around i guess. It's depressing to keep getting shut down though. Especially when I know I can definitely do the job and would work hard at it.

And there 's me thinking that because of Brexit a lot of companies are relocating to Europe and Eire.
