Smoke Watch

I'll be glad when this is over. My local paper and the online press seem to have nothing but red skullcaps on all the pages. I suppose that it makes it easier to flick over the pages to something that does not have red on it.

Don't want to slag off Catholicism but aren't they aware they are about 1,000 years out of date ?
They should have got the message in the 16th century when many decided they wanted something more relevent.
The rules and regs are set in stone ( the bible ) !!

my kids go to a great catholic school and i love everything about it,but man that church is so out of date. How can the pope justify telling third world countries not to use contraception. They have kids, cant feed them and they die a slow death. What does that make the pope

You have to laugh, there are around 1.2 billion Catholics worldwide who might actually give a flying **** about whose appointed next. Do they post it on facebook ? Do they tweet it on twitter ? Do they phone the worlds media ?

No they build a feckin chimney and polute the poor citizens of Rome with noxious black smoke for days on end.

You try spewing filthy black smoke out of a chimney and see how long it is before some jobs worth from the local council comes knocking and handing out fines.

Irresponsible kiddy fiddlers

Well, I was brought up a catholic (although I don't know what I'd be classed as now), and I agree the Church is very out of date. However, this above comment re contraception is a common complaint, but it doesn't hold much weight with me. After all, there are a lot of things the church says to do and not do. Like don't kill, don't steal, no sex before marriage, no adultery and so on. Does everyone in Africa follow this? Of course not. They do what they do for other reasons. It's a convenient excuse (as usual) to blame religion for what are very human problems.

Also, re kids and not being able to feed them. I was horrified to discover last year, that some of the children who were abandoned and starving and receiving aid from charities were discovered to be part of the same family as children who were looked after by their parents and fed. In other words, the parents chose to keep one and abandon the other. Why? Because one was a boy and one was a girl.

Sometimes it's white smoke.

I thought the whole idea of organisations such as this is to elect leaders. Not just some figurehead who's job it is to keep everyone happy. No wonder they are not making any progress is it. Seems to me everywhere we look these days there are all the wrong types in all the wrong jobs just maintaining status quo and trying not to upset anybody.

I really fancy starting my own revolution....Right, who's behind me ?

sure, but if they say you can use contraceptives then he will instantly save a lot of lives,

Why?

Even if the pope says you can use contraceptives, people won't. The same way the pope can say lots of things, and people won't. If the Pope says, 'no war and no killing', do you actually believe there will not be any war in Africa again or killing? People don't really care that much what the pope says.

There are lots of catholics in the UK. Does none of them use contraceptives? What about the home of the pope in Italy? Do they not use contraceptives?

Why is there some sort of belief that those in Africa are just following the pope's every word? It's absurd. They don't. It's obvious they don't. They're no different from us in the west. They do what they want to maximise short term or long term gain in their view.

I think his point is that there are still some people who will listen to what the church says, especially in backward countries. Plus it gives them another excuse not to use them I suppose, 'the pope says I cant, sorry'.

Yep. And I think this 'backward countries' idea is the real problem. There is an implicit assumption that these people don't know what's best for them. One could almost say, that some people think these people are 'slaves' to what the pope says. That's not been my experience in Africa.

U.K. is a backward country in my view.

I recommend "The Power of the Dog" by Don Winslow.

How will they make the smoke this time?

I always thought it was them burning the last bloke that had the job.
