Hi,

I'm doing the Ian Williams course from his site Forex Trading Made Easy and tried to sign up for a trading account with IG Index in London. Very helpfully they told me that I'd need to open an account with their Milan branch (I live in Italy). So far , so good. I opened a demo account to try things out but it kept crashing and blocking my computer. I tried on my laptop (same internet connection) and the same kept happening. When I didn't go ahead opening the live account customer support called me and I explained. they said to check java updates etc and call tech support etc

I eventually gave up and wondered if anyone else has had problems with their platform or was it me/my computers or my internet connection? I tried other brokers demo accounts and had no problems with their platforms. The company were very helpful and I'm sure they are a serious company but I couldn't get their platform to work on my computer, any suggestions?

Thanks

Jim

ps - I signed up with Oanda and am happy with their platform. Just trading 1k lots and taking things easy but so far so good!!

I use IG daily with no problems - but also found Oanda very good. Stick with them if it works ok. There could be tax issues though.

Jim,

Instead of using an Internet Explorer browser use a Mozilla Firefox browser as it is
quicker and you get less hang ups.

I know spread betting is tax free. How about forex? May I know what tax issues are you talking about?

Spreadbetting of forex in the UK is tax free at present. But use the likes of Oanda any profits may be liable to tax. I am no expert but is a lot of info on here about it if you have time to search.

If you new to trading I would stick with someone like IG - change your browser as was suggested earlier. Or try Capital Spreads or CMC maybe. Or buy a new pc !!

I use iG most days on live account and have Explorer 6 (I think) works great. Must be something silly like the java.

Good luck.

Thanks for the information. Yes I'm new to trading and I have recently opened IG plus account. The spreads on IG doesn't look competitive though. With regards to the browser I use Firefox 3.5.2 or Google Chrome 2.0. Both of them are very quick to load trading platform and charts (which uses Java engine). IE (any versions) are rubbish to be honest.

I will search the forums for tax implications using onada or others.

Have a look at alpari.co.uk - they offer a free demo and give free MT4 charting package. Its worth it for that alone.

You can also try FXCM's platform. It's downloadable and a spreadbetting forex account is available.

Thanks Claudia,

From the homework I've done I think you can earn a certain amount from trading before tax here in Italy. Right now I'm just trying to become consistent earning a certain amount of pips per day and not worrying about earning big money. When I feel confident I'll up my lot size. I've had a look at alpari and they seem like a serious company. I haven't used the metatrader platform. Are there any advantages/disadvantages to using it rather than any other platform? I liked using the FXCM platform on a demo account but was put off it by the amount of negative comments about them (so difficult to know who to trust for info etc).

Thanks again for the advice

Jim

Continuing on the tax front, it may of interest that if you pay taxes in France you are liable to a whopping 30% Capital Gains Tax on all spreadbetting or CFD winnings

does people live outsider of uk can play spreadbets?

and what's different of tax apply franceman play CFD and spreadbet?

So far as I'm aware spreadbetting is confined to UK brokers; brokers in the US and Europe offer only CFD dealing. I'm sorry, but I do not understand the second part of the question.
