Just want to know how other people trade. For myself I then to hold on to a position for a few hours. I look at the 60min chart, daily chart and 15 min chart. I am basically a day trader. I tried holding on positions overnight (on demo account) and achieved fantastic results!

Horses for courses, each to their own and really depends on what your plan and goals are...

I'm sure there's members who hold for months. Others, minutes, personally it can be an hour or it could be 24. Trade your plan and let the market guide you and try not think within boundaries of time and labels.

Depends certainly on the market and the timeframe, I put the trade on.

Between seconds and hours. Usually I'm flat at the close. Long Term positions I do only in options, then holding sometimes weeks.

Depends on the market movements.

I go in intending to hold for hours or a few days, but if the market jumps on news, I'll take the bonus profit, and leave the position open with a much smaller amount.

Until is either hits my stop, my target or its performance toward target goes off schedule.

This is significant progess from too long and not long enough, trust me.

Similar here, initial stop loss, ambitious take profit, then once I'm in profts I'll set my SL to breakeven once I hit around 1 - 2 X initial R(isk) or so, and after that trail my stop, until either my SL / TP is hit, or, before either of that happens, the trend is over, and I then close my position.

Why do you hold onto a position that way ? whats the reasoning behind it ?

Under what conditions should a trade be terminated, or stopped. ?

Ideally when should we close a long ? Ditto shorts, what would make sense ? what reasons or factors would/ should be in the list ?

I'll start the first one off for the readers (which may or may not be typical experiences)

1) Its non farm payrolls in 3 minutes and I need to take another dump...... (is that a prior news postion I see before me ?)

2) (evryone else chips in here)

c'mon now lets make it count......

when should the trade be stopped ? good question. (y)

I like number 1 above

me

until it stops making money for me and I judge the risk of holding longer outways the potencial reward

AT THE FRONT END = IN THE MOMENT= MOVE FORWARD = IS THE TRADE STILL VALID

It all depends on what you expect.
Personally i day trade, so i allways try not to leave an overnigth position, i have done it some times some i have won a lot and other i have lost allmost everything, the basic problem here lies on the fact that you shouldnt want to risk it all for a chance to make some extra pips. When i have to leave an overnigth position i allways leave it covered.
My basic reasoning is all i wnat is to make some pips on each trade, it doesnt matter if i have to make lots of trades to support my profit, to do so i try to support my desitions on stochastic and confirm trends with EMA

Until cimax is observed?

========================================================================

to my everlasting humiliation, my overnite trades played off the 4 hour chart are my big ticket items --- during the day, while direction and tp are correct, the time it takes to get from one point to another is taken up by all the market machinations of all the charts having to be played out before my 15 min chart comes up to bat. At times, a 15 min chart play can take hours and hours, but the overnite (from 12 midnite, EDT ON) is clearer and cleaner, although it takes into its time period the london open --- just that once the H4 has topped you KNOW its going down and if i short the move, i will be awake JUST before it normally hits my tp, and so able to continue or take a reversal.

i wish i could do as well during the day as i do while sleeping, which just may say something i dont really want to face !

Now getting down to how long i hold is an unfortunate question since i trade every timeframe out there and a few no one has much ever sees (like the 3 minute chart, similar to a soft boiled egg i guess !)

while i will never admit to having said this, i have held for a month as a position comes back to where profit exists --- one time having been over a month because i forgot to put a tp point on my trade, so it hung out there as the price passed its profit point, with me never seeing it. Being a perfectly good bunch of shares, i could not bring myself to throwing them away, so tucked them in a corner, fed and washed them nightly and after a month or so they grew into profitable shares (also understand that i caould see on the charts that the price would recover from its downside move in relatively short time, so i held --- not advised for those who cant make a decent guess at this sort of thing !
enjoy and trade well

but the bottom line is i pretty much know where the price is going, but not always exactly when it gets there, so most "mistakes" are covered within one or two days, while normal trades are usually covered in a few minutes or hours !

It would take an awful lot for me to throw away a trade, and while the complete and utter destruction of the planet could tempt me, ive been lucky enough to always make my mistakes in the direction of the trend, and have enough margin to cover the rare problem child till the cavalry arrives !

enjoy and trade well

shouldnt one plan the trade beforehand and then trade that plan?

if i were to remain in a position longer than i anticipated (it shot further than i thought) then i would use trailing stops after taking half off the table.

personally i like 2 or 3 day holds but have held as long as a fortnight (earnings runs) and as short as hours (daily highs and lows).

Hi Bramble,

Can I ask what type of strategy you employ? I ask because I noticed that you mentioned a "Target" Stop, which IMO can be profit restricting in certain cases.

Just interested...

My last position (about half hour ago) was a trade that lasted for over 4 minutes :)

I hold onto my position until my indicators tell me to get out.
