NIkkei, a leader or follower?

NIkkei, a leader or follower?
I can pretty much predict what the hangseng, strait times, and SET will do based on the previous day's US market out come and the current day's US futures movement, but the NIKKEI seems to be a bit more independent. Any thoughts or info on this?

Look at the Topix for a broad view of the Japanese market.
